ARTIST STATEMENT

For over 25 years I have been working collaboratively in glass with my husband, Dale Steffey.
In response to a desire to work in a more spontaneous way, I have embarked on a new body of work in oils.

Painting has been my first medium, and I have worked with oils in some capacity for over 37 years. My experiments with painted textures, and combining painted images with glass images provided a springboard into this recent exploration. Working in a primarily abstract manner I emphasize layering of colors and textures, surface depth and allowing the surface to “breathe”. Some of the painting techniques involve glazing, combing, oil resist, rubbing out and scraping paint across the surface. My sensibilities have gravitated to more organic forms as opposed to geometric or industrial imagery.

Completing each piece is challenging – like finishing a puzzle, and I find this work rewarding and a good counterpoint to the methodical planning and execution of the fused glass. My hope is that you find this work compelling as well.
